A Song of Ice and Fire

Ok ok ok. Recently my D&D group has been forcing this series down my throat. It's a 7 book series with book 5 coming out this year. It's called A Song of Ice and Fire

That's the series names, the first book is called Game of Thrones. It came out quite some time ago actually and is being made into a HBO series. So to shut my friends up, I decided to start reading the series. I've made it past book 1 and am into book 2 rather quickly. Book 1 started off a little slow, but as soon as you get past basically character introductions and the like, it really picks up. And let me tell you, this book is awesome! My friends claim it to be one of the best fantasy book series ever, and I'm starting to see why. It's fantastic, each chapter is dedicated to one of the characters so it kinda jumps around. I find myself wanting to push through to get to some of my favorite characters like Jon or Danny; but it's all great. The story is just plain awesome. Kings and knights, battles for the throne, etc.

If you like fantasy, start reading this series. You will not be disappointed.

I keep hearing about this series, but I haven't picked it up yet. I'm going to add it to my Sony Reader wishlist so next time I get a gift certificate, I'll download it to that! Nice!

Yeah, the first book came out like late 90's and I never heard of it. It wasn't until my buddies kept pestering me to read it that I finally borrowed the books and read them. And I'm glad I did. I think they're books you'll really get into as well as you seem to be a fan of the sci-fi/fantasy genres.

Absolutely - reminds me in a way of the Wheel of Time series, which is where me and SaitoH got the names of our characters on PSO (Nynaeve is a main character, as is Aviendha). They have a "series" deal on things like this for my e-reader, psyched!

How is that e-reader thing? I was thinking of getting one, but I'm never really traveling much so I can always just bring the book. But is it much more convenient? Even for like regular things, like reading in the park or something like that? I like the idea of the e-reader, and that probably is why I want one. Just need justification.

I have the Sony Reader, and I love it. It's not even one of the new fancy wireless update ones with a touchscreen, it's older, I update it by purchasing books on the Sony store and attach it to the computer with a USB cord like you would with an iPod. Because it's not wireless, I don't lose a bunch of space to the damn keyboard like with the Kindle. The text is very easy on the eyes, and I can change the font size as well which helps when I get tired. I can organize my books into folders, and I have a case that includes a "LightWedge" type cover to read in the dark without a light on. For me, with pain in my hands especially when it's cold, it's great to hold one thin thing and press a button to turn the page rather than have to hold open a book. Battery life is HUGE - I barely charge it more than once every 2 weeks or so, and I use it nightly - it charges with the computer, or via the wall outlet.

Prices on the ebooks are great, there's a ton of free ones, the Sony reads PDFs too so I often download work stuff for travel rather than carry printouts or have to open my laptop on the plane. Plus, they have gift certificates, so now my family just buys me those and I get to buy whatever I want when I want them!

My only complaint is that they don't have an iPhone app yet - Kindle has an iPhone app that lets you read your purchases on either device...I want that for my Sony, cause sometimes I forget to take it with me.
