The Last Airbender...A.K.A. a big waste of money...

Postby Skitty_Bizzle on July 4th, 2010, 3:02 pm

I went and saw this movie with a few friends last even though Ikari had already destroyed it on facebook, let me tell you, i should have listened to his sage advice... The movie was long, which wouldn't usually be a problem had i been entertained, which made everything else in the moving even worse because i had to see so much of it. The script was awful and so was the acting, not to mention that they left holes in the plot and explained things crappily. At one point Zuko talks about how he almost got his honor back, which they had not explained that he had been exiled, and it was like they watched the movie through and realized they hadn't ever explained how he got exiled and why he needs his honor back so they threw in a scene with him and his uncle in a tea shop.

Not only that but if you watched the show like i did there was a multitude of mistakes that made me nerd rage, for one they pronounced most of the names wrong and on top of that bending was controlled by the spirits...which totally is not how it was in the show...

Around the last third of the movie i actually fell asleep, which has never happened during a movie i paid to see and i tend to go and see midnight releases often, so if nothing else that should tell you not to see this movie, well i guess you could if you wanted to pay 11 to 15 dollars to take a nap...

Dude, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I have seen several of the episodes, and my son is an absolute fan, but I didn't expect it to be the same - there's no way it could and hit the mainstream audience, sadly.

The way they explained Zuko was fine - they often do that in stories, imply something and then explain it later in the storyline for "suspense", and the way that the moon spirit controlled the bending was exactly how it is in the show - without the moon, they cannot waterbend, just like without the sun, the fire nation is screwed, right? Although it was weird that they freaked out when Uncle could bend fire without any around, because can't they do that now?

When it comes down to it, the director is arrogant and felt he could change the pronunciations, but overall I thought the heart of the story was there and it was fun to watch, despite being watered down and altered to make it more vanilla...but I don't think it sucked as much as people think.

Except - why were the "bad guys" middle eastern, the water benders white, the earth benders asian, etc?

I hope they do make the next book, cause I'd go see it.

So, how are the special effects? I don't know anything about the story, except that I zapped from time to time to the anime on tv. I only saw the trailer and I thought that it could be nice popcorn cinema. I plan to buy it on blue ray but I read now different opinions. Is the movie fun to watch when I don't know much about the anime and such?

I thought the special effects were great - I saw it in 3D, and it was a beautiful movie. I think that by not watching the cartoon (my son, Mr. Anime, informed me this isn't officially an anime, it's an American Cartoon - whatever!! LOL!) you'll enjoy it more, because you're not expecting things or looking for things, you know?

The movie was horrible. I mean, it was probably better than Ultraviolet, but if so not by much. I love the cartoon series, one of the best American cartoon series out there. I went to see the movie with a bunch of friends, and even those who have never seen the cartoon thought to movie was bad. The bending parts were cool, but few and far between. The acting was god awful. The plot riddled with holes. I always expect some sort of change with movies. You can't capture an entire season in one movie. Fair enough. But it was different in every bad way possible. The dialog was bad or clumsy at many spots, the voice overs weren't all that great. Many characters lacked from development at all, especially Sokka who is flipping cool in the cartoon, but very poorly developed in the show. I don't know, I thought the movie was trash and I don't think it got favorable reviews. It was long, but I can go for long movies if they are engaging enough. This one just wasn't. You're much better off watching the cartoon series. It's really good.

Wait...what do you mean by voiceovers?

I agree it wasn't the best movie I have ever seen, but I liked it more than any of Shamawhathisface's lately. But yes, the cartoon isn't even in the same realm. I was just watching it!
